For Christians trying to understand the technological transformation unfolding around us, one question deserves more careful attention than almost any other: did the COVID-19 period merely introduce a new vaccine technology, or did it accelerate a much larger movement toward programmable biology, human augmentation, biodigital convergence, interoperable digital identity, and technologically mediated governance?
That question should not be answered through rumors about microscopic robots or claims that cannot be demonstrated from vaccine ingredient lists. The documentary record is considerably stronger than that.
Governments, defence agencies, biotechnology corporations, international organisations, and technology-policy institutions now openly discuss programming biological systems, connecting human bodies to digital networks, altering human capabilities, integrating artificial intelligence with synthetic biology, and building digital infrastructures through which identity, health status, payments, credentials, and public services can become interoperable.
The responsible Christian concern, therefore, is not that every scientist involved in these developments consciously intends evil. Scripture does not permit us to judge motives we cannot know. The deeper concern is that humanity is constructing technological capabilities that could profoundly redefine what it means to be human and place unprecedented administrative power over biological and social life into increasingly interconnected systems.
The Words “Biodigital Convergence” Are Not a Conspiracy-Theory Invention
One of the most important documents in this discussion comes not from an alternative-media website but from Policy Horizons Canada, the Government of Canada’s strategic foresight organisation.
Its report Exploring Biodigital Convergence describes an emerging future in which biological and digital systems increasingly combine. Policy Horizons Canada (2020) identifies three forms of this convergence: the physical integration of biological and digital entities, the co-evolution of biological and digital technologies, and a conceptual convergence in which biology itself increasingly becomes understood through engineering and information-processing models.
The document becomes considerably more striking when discussing human beings. It says biodigital convergence can create capacities to change human bodies, minds, and behaviours and could transform how society understands what is “human” or “natural.” It discusses brain-machine interfaces, digital technologies embedded within organisms, biological components incorporated into technological systems, genetic manipulation, and the possibility that society may need entirely new governance arrangements for this emerging biodigital environment.
That is remarkably close to what critics have been calling transhumanist convergence.
No allegation of a secret meeting is required. The terminology and technological trajectory appear in an official government foresight document.
Human Augmentation Has Already Become a Strategic Defence Subject
The same trajectory appears in military planning.
In 2021, the United Kingdom Ministry of Defence published Human Augmentation: The Dawn of a New Paradigm, produced through cooperation between the UK’s Development, Concepts and Doctrine Centre and Germany’s Bundeswehr Office for Defence Planning. The document is explicitly a strategic think piece rather than official government policy, but its purpose is nevertheless significant: preparing defence institutions for technologies capable of enhancing human performance.
The Ministry of Defence (2021) states that developments in human augmentation are converging with artificial intelligence, sensors, nanotechnology, novel materials, and other technological fields. The project considers genetic engineering, bioinformatics, brain-computer interfaces, and technologies that may affect future military and social capabilities.
NATO’s technology forecasting has likewise grouped human augmentation with neuro-electronics, artificial intelligence, prosthetics, cognitive enhancement, and synthetic biology, including genetic engineering and modified biological systems.
This matters because “transhumanism” is sometimes dismissed as science fiction. Yet governments are already developing regulatory, military, and ethical frameworks for technologies whose stated purpose can move beyond healing toward enhancing human capacities.
Peer-reviewed literature confirms that distinction. Erden and Brey (2023) explain that neurotechnologies developed therapeutically may also enhance memory, cognition, or other capacities beyond ordinary human functioning. A major 2025 review similarly concluded that emerging enhancement technologies could reshape society profoundly enough to require new ethical and regulatory boundaries.
The Human Brain Is Becoming an Interface
Brain-computer integration is no longer theoretical either.
The US Food and Drug Administration issued formal guidance in 2021 for implanted brain-computer interface devices, describing them as neuroprostheses that interface directly with the nervous system. The FDA stated that the field was moving from fundamental neuroscience toward clinical translation and eventual market access.
The US National Institutes of Health’s BRAIN Initiative has similarly supported technologies capable of recording neural activity, stimulating brain circuits, and developing future generations of implantable devices.
By 2025, the ethical implications had become sufficiently serious that UNESCO adopted the first global Recommendation on the Ethics of Neurotechnology. UNESCO warns that neurotechnologies can access or influence brain activity and, when combined with artificial intelligence, raise questions about identity, autonomy, cognitive liberty, mental privacy, and the possibility of manipulation. UNESCO even warns that neural information could potentially be exploited commercially or politically.
That is not the language of fringe speculation. It is international governance responding to technologies that increasingly penetrate the boundary between the human nervous system and computational systems.
Biology Is Increasingly Being Treated as Programmable
The second major development is programmable biology.
DARPA’s Living Foundries programme says explicitly that it sought to program the fundamental metabolic processes of biological systems and transform synthetic biomanufacturing into a predictable engineering practice. Its work involved genome editing, automated biological design, machine learning, modular genetic components, and repeated design-build-test cycles.
The OECD has now documented the convergence even more plainly. Its 2025 assessment Synthetic Biology, AI and Automation states that synthetic biology is increasingly being integrated with artificial intelligence and robotics, allowing biological systems to be redesigned more rapidly and enabling increasingly complex applications. The OECD discusses synthetic cells, genome manipulation, machine-assisted biological design, and anticipatory governance of the resulting risks.
Even the phrase “rewriting the genetic code” is established scientific terminology. Mukai and colleagues (2017), writing in Annual Review of Microbiology, reviewed technologies for recoding genomes and assigning novel functions to genetic systems.
Again, this does not mean COVID vaccination secretly accomplished those things. It means something more defensible: modern biotechnology increasingly approaches biological processes as systems that can be instructed, edited, designed, and programmed.
Moderna’s “Software of Life” Language Was Literal Corporate Strategy
This provides the proper context for Moderna’s famous terminology.
Moderna has repeatedly described messenger RNA as the “software of life.” This was not an isolated remark by a rogue executive. Moderna repeated the phrase in formal Securities and Exchange Commission filings, explaining that mRNA carries biological instructions that cells use to produce proteins. Moderna’s current corporate filing continues to describe DNA metaphorically as biological information storage and mRNA as programmable instructions.
Tal Zaks similarly told a TEDx audience in 2017 that biotechnology was “hacking the software of life” and described mRNA intervention through the metaphor of adding or modifying lines of biological code.
The statement should not be distorted into “Zaks admitted the vaccine permanently changes DNA.” He did not.
But neither should its philosophical significance be ignored.
An important conceptual shift is occurring when human biology is increasingly understood as programmable informational architecture.
Elon Musk made the same conceptual point, although in characteristically extravagant language, during the 2020 Axel Springer Award discussion. Speaking about synthetic RNA and DNA generally, Musk described biology as analogous to computer programming and speculated that future genetic technologies could eventually accomplish astonishing modifications, even reversing ageing. Axel Springer confirms that the interview occurred on December 1, 2020, while the published transcript preserves Musk’s remarks.
His statement is evidence of the technological imagination surrounding programmable biology. It is not evidence that COVID vaccines already achieved such modifications.
That distinction matters.
Klaus Schwab Explicitly Described a Fusion of the Biological, Digital, and Physical
Klaus Schwab’s Fourth Industrial Revolution provides the wider ideological framework.
Schwab (2016) described the Fourth Industrial Revolution as a fusion of technologies blurring the boundaries between the physical, digital, and biological spheres. He listed artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, biotechnology, robotics, and other technologies and predicted transformations not merely of industry but of entire systems of production, management, and governance.
Most significantly, he wrote that this revolution would change not merely what human beings do but who they are, affecting identity and potentially leading to human augmentation. The WEF’s announcement of Schwab’s book likewise highlighted genetic editing and neurotechnological brain enhancement as characteristic technologies of this new industrial revolution.
Then came COVID-19.
On June 3, 2020, Schwab stated explicitly that COVID-19 had accelerated the transition into the Fourth Industrial Revolution and argued for integrating governments, businesses, and wider societal stakeholders into a new model of global cooperation.
In a separate Great Reset article, he called the pandemic a rare opportunity to restructure economic and social systems and specifically proposed harnessing Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies to accomplish that transformation.
One need not claim that the pandemic was deliberately created for this purpose to recognize the historical fact: influential institutions explicitly regarded COVID-19 as an accelerator and opportunity for systemic technological transformation.
From the Internet of Things to the Internet of Bodies
In August 2020, the World Economic Forum published The Internet of Bodies Is Here.
The document describes connected devices and sensors worn on, implanted into, or ingested inside human bodies. These technologies generate biometric and behavioural information that may interact with healthcare, employment, insurance, finance, education, and other areas of social life. Importantly, the WEF itself warns about risks to autonomy, privacy, discrimination, and access to important social resources.
Those warnings should be taken seriously precisely because they come from advocates of technological development.
A peer-reviewed analysis published during the pandemic similarly observed that wearable health technologies and corporate data infrastructures were helping normalize a “quantified” population whose biological information could increasingly be mediated by private technological platforms.
This is the practical meaning of biodigital convergence: the human body itself increasingly becomes a source of continuously measurable, analysable, networked information.
COVID Infrastructure Did Not Simply Disappear
Perhaps the strongest evidence connecting COVID to technocratic governance concerns what happened to its digital infrastructure afterward.
During the pandemic, digital COVID certificates were created to verify vaccination or testing status and facilitate movement. In 2023, the World Health Organization and European Commission announced that WHO would take up the technological framework developed for the EU Digital COVID Certificate and use it as the first building block of the Global Digital Health Certification Network.
WHO now describes that system as global digital public infrastructure capable of supporting interoperable health documents across countries. Potential applications include vaccination records, prescriptions, international patient summaries, and other verified health credentials. WHO states that it does not centrally receive the underlying personal health information, an important safeguard that should be acknowledged.
Meanwhile, the European Union is implementing its Digital Identity Wallet. By the end of 2026, Member States are expected to make wallets available that can hold or verify identity attributes, government credentials, educational qualifications, driving licences, prescriptions, social-security information, travel documentation, bank-access credentials, and payment-related identification. The EU insists the system is voluntary and privacy-preserving. Nevertheless, the degree of interoperability is historically significant.
Digital identity, health credentials, financial services, government services, and personal attributes are increasingly becoming parts of interoperable digital ecosystems.
That is not speculation. It is published architecture.
Even the United Nations Acknowledges the Danger of Digital Infrastructure
The UN’s own Digital Public Infrastructure safeguards work makes the risk especially difficult to dismiss.
UNDP defines DPI as foundational digital infrastructure connecting people, businesses, and governments through systems including identity, payments, and data exchange.
Yet the UN also acknowledges that improperly governed DPI can generate privacy vulnerabilities, discrimination, exclusion, disempowerment, weak accountability, and human-rights violations. Its Universal DPI Safeguards Framework explicitly identifies those dangers.
This admission is extremely important.
Christians do not need to imagine that digital infrastructure could exclude people. Its designers themselves acknowledge exclusion as a foreseeable systemic risk.
The sober concern is therefore architectural rather than sensational: when identity, health, payments, services, and behavioural data become interoperable, whoever establishes the conditions of access possesses extraordinary governing power.
A system designed for inclusion can technically also facilitate exclusion.
What Does Scripture Ask Us to Discern?
None of this proves that Klaus Schwab is the Antichrist, that a digital wallet is the mark of the beast, or that every scientist developing biotechnology consciously serves an occult agenda. Scripture does not authorize such careless identifications.
Nor should we claim that Daniel’s fourth kingdom is the Fourth Industrial Revolution merely because both contain the number four. Daniel 2:40–43 does not mention biotechnology.
But Scripture gives us an unmistakable theological framework.
The serpent’s promise in Genesis 3:4–5 was that humanity could transcend creaturely limitation and become “like God.” Babel in Genesis 11:1–9 demonstrates the danger of technological capacity combined with centralized human ambition. Revelation 13:16–17 reveals that the final beastly order will eventually connect allegiance with economic participation.
The technology is not itself the prophecy. But our generation is constructing something previous generations could scarcely have imagined: globally interoperable systems capable of identifying, authenticating, monitoring, communicating with, and potentially conditioning access for enormous populations almost instantaneously.
That deserves sober attention.
The Trojan Horse May Be Bigger Than a Vaccine
Perhaps, therefore, the most defensible formulation is not that COVID vaccines secretly contained artificial intelligence.
The evidence does not establish that.
The stronger conclusion is that the COVID era dramatically accelerated public acceptance, investment, regulation, and infrastructure associated with a wider biodigital transformation already underway.
Programmable biology is real.
Human augmentation research is real.
Brain-computer interfaces are real.
The Internet of Bodies is real.
Biodigital convergence is an explicit government foresight category.
AI-synthetic biology convergence is now an OECD policy subject.
Global digital health certification infrastructure is operational.
Interoperable digital identity systems are being implemented.
International institutions themselves acknowledge that these systems create risks involving autonomy, privacy, manipulation, discrimination, and exclusion.
Christians should therefore reject both gullibility and denial.
1 Thessalonians 5:21 commands us to test everything. 2 Thessalonians 2:9–12 warns about a civilization vulnerable to deception because it refuses to love truth.
We therefore should not build Christian discernment on claims that cannot survive investigation. Truth is strong enough.
The deeper question is this: when technology promises to overcome biological limitation, redesign humanity, connect bodies to computational systems, quantify behaviour, and mediate access to economic and social life, are we merely witnessing neutral innovation, or are we also watching humanity rehearse an ancient temptation to redefine itself apart from its Creator?
Our hope is not technological immortality.
The Christian awaits something incomparably greater. Christ “will transform the body of our humble condition into the likeness of his glorious body” according to Philippians 3:20–21.
Humanity does not need to hack its way into glory.
We need the risen Christ.
