Christians have always watched the heavens with a mixture of awe and sobriety. Scripture says God set the lights “for signs and for seasons” (Genesis 1:14) and that “the heavens declare the glory of God” (Psalm 19:1). Jesus Himself foretold “signs in the sun, moon, and stars” that would unsettle the nations and call His people to look up with hopeful urgency (Luke 21:25–28). At the same time, He warned against date-setting, since “about that day and hour no one knows” (Matthew 24:36). So how do we discern wisely? What follows is a careful, chronological walkthrough of notable celestial events in living memory and the near future, paired with biblical reflection for a novice reader. The goal is not to sensationalize, but to ask honest questions: what might God be saying? how should we live if His return is near? and how do we avoid deception while remaining watchful (1 Thessalonians 4:16–18; 1 Corinthians 15:51–52)?
What Scripture actually promises about “signs”
From the first page of Scripture, the heavenly lights serve divine purposes, including "signs" and "appointed times" (Genesis 1:14). The Bible contains numerous examples of celestial signs: the Star of Bethlehem that guided the wise men to the infant Jesus (Matthew 2:1-12), the darkness at Christ's crucifixion (Matthew 27:45), and Joshua's long day when the sun stood still (Joshua 10:12-13). The prophets speak of the sun darkened and the moon turned to blood before the "great and terrible day of the Lord" (Joel 2:31), language echoed by Jesus and the apostles (Matthew 24:29–31; Acts 2:19–21; Revelation 6:12–17). None of these texts license date-setting, but they do tell us to stay awake, discerning the "signs of the times" with humility, repentance, and readiness (Matthew 24:42–44; Hebrews 10:24–25). Is it possible that some current celestial headlines function as wake-up calls rather than clocks?
A brief chronology of notable celestial markers
In 2014–2015, four total lunar eclipses occurred in close succession, a “tetrad” that drew attention because of its timing near Passover and Sukkot in consecutive years. Whatever one makes of the correlation, the tetrad itself is well-documented by astronomers (timeanddate, 2014–2015). On April 15, 2014, the first eclipse in that sequence occurred, with additional eclipses on October 8, 2014, April 4, 2015, and September 28, 2015 (timeanddate, 2014; Wired, 2014). These “blood moons” reignited popular conversation about Joel’s prophecy, though astronomers rightly note that such eclipses have natural causes and periodicities (timeanddate, 2014). Still, might God use familiar cycles to stir sleepy hearts?
On September 23, 2017, popular ministries pointed to an unusual alignment in the constellation Virgo sometimes called the “Revelation 12 sign,” claiming it resembled the imagery of Revelation 12:1–2. That specific interpretation is debated and not universally accepted, but the claim and date are matters of public record (Red Moon Rapture, 2017; Signs of the Rapture, 2017). The question is pastoral: are we chasing novelties, or letting even imperfect sign-talk drive us back to Scripture and holiness?
The United States then experienced two rare total solar eclipses seven years apart: August 21, 2017, and April 8, 2024. Their paths of totality formed an “X” over parts of the Midwest, crossing near southern Illinois (National Eclipse, n.d.; NASA, 2023). Some believers read the paired tracks as a warning to a nation drifting from God. Others urge caution, reminding us that eclipses follow predictable mechanics. Both are true: the mechanics are real, and warnings may still be timely. Does the God who rules the calculus not also shepherd hearts through it?
In May 2024, Earth was struck by the strongest geomagnetic storm in more than two decades, pushing auroras into unusually low latitudes worldwide (NASA, 2024). Again, there is a plain scientific explanation, yet the Bible invites us to see nature’s grandeur as an attention-getter, not an accident (Romans 1:20). Will we pray differently when the skies burn green over our neighborhoods?
Looking ahead from the present moment, 2025 included a total lunar eclipse on March 13–14 and a blood moon visible over Jerusalem on September 7, 2025. Additionally, a partial solar eclipse will occur on September 21–22, just hours before the Feast of Trumpets begins on September 22, 2025, with visibility varying by region (People, 2025; NASA, 2025). This close proximity between the solar eclipse and the Feast of Trumpets is particularly noteworthy. These celestial events do not automatically fulfill prophecy, yet they can be received as reminders: are we living reconciled, forgiving, and evangelizing while it's still day (2 Corinthians 5:18–20; John 9:4)?
Where the Feast of Trumpets sits on the timeline
The Feast of Trumpets (Yom Teruah/Rosh Hashanah) begins the civil year on 1–2 Tishri. In 2025, it begins at sundown Monday, September 22, and runs through nightfall Wednesday, September 24, making the daylight dates Tuesday–Wednesday, September 23–24 (Hebcal, 2025; Chabad, 2025; JCal, 2025). Trumpet imagery often evokes resurrection and the gathering of the Church (1 Corinthians 15:52; 1 Thessalonians 4:16). Scripture does not say the Rapture must occur on this feast, but the symbolic resonance is obvious. Does the annual blast push us to a lifestyle of readiness rather than a year of speculation?
Stars will fall from heaven
Scripture speaks of celestial events preceding the Day of the Lord, with Jesus declaring, "the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken" (Matthew 24:29). The apostle John's vision similarly described stars falling "to the earth as a fig tree drops its unripe figs when shaken by a high wind" (Revelation 6:13). While we must be cautious about direct correlations, it's worth noting the timeframes between the upcoming Feast of Trumpets and significant astronomical events. From the Feast of Trumpets in 2025 to the Apophis asteroid's close approach spans approximately 3.5 years, while the distance to the once-concerning 2013 TV135 date is nearly 7 years (i.e. December 2032). These timeframes invite sober reflection on biblical chronologies without demanding date-setting presumption.
Apophis in 2029: what it is, and what it is not
According to NASA, Asteroid 99942 Apophis will make an extraordinarily close, safe flyby of Earth on Friday, April 13, 2029, passing about 32,000 km from the surface, closer than many geostationary satellites (NASA Science, 2025; JPL, n.d.). NASA reported to have ruled out any impact risk from Apophis for at least the next century based on radar and optical tracking refined in 2021 (NASA, 2021). Because of its proximity, Apophis will likely be visible to the naked eye for millions across parts of Africa and Europe, a once-in-millennia opportunity for science and public engagement (NASA Science, 2025; Titus et al., 2025). NASA’s OSIRIS-APEX spacecraft is already en route to study Apophis around the flyby, and ESA is advancing a complementary RAMSES mission proposal to observe its pre- and post-encounter state (NASA, 2023; Reuters, 2025).
Could Apophis be the "Wormwood" from Revelation 8:10–11? While NASA's calculations—which are human calculations with inherent limitations—confidently predict a safe flyby in 2029, only God knows the ultimate path and purpose of this celestial object. Wormwood in Revelation describes a catastrophic event that poisons waters, whereas current scientific consensus indicates Apophis poses no impact threat. Yet we must remember that while NASA carefully calibrates its public messaging to avoid unnecessary alarm, God alone determines cosmic trajectories. Could this global spectacle, named after an ancient god of chaos, serve as a divine prompt regardless of its physical path? How might the Lord be using this heightened attention to re-awaken the Church to hope and holiness?
The 2032 “asteroid”: what actually happened
In October 2013, a newly discovered asteroid, 2013 TV135, briefly appeared on NASA’s Sentry risk list with a very small chance of an Earth impact in 2032. Early press reports variously quoted August 26 or October dates. As astronomers gathered more data, the impact probability dropped to essentially zero, and on November 8, 2013 the object was removed from risk tables (JPL, 2013; ESA NEO, 2013). If we use the December 22, 2032 date that appears in the authoritative early estimates (NASA,2024), the day-counts listed above apply. The key point: 2013 TV135 is not expected to impact Earth; it serves instead as a case study in how early orbital uncertainties shrink with further observation (JPL, 2013; ESA NEO, 2013).
Does that make such headlines meaningless? Not at all. While NASA carefully calibrates its public messaging to avoid unnecessary alarm, we must remember that even their calculations are human and have inherent limitations. God alone determines cosmic trajectories and purposes. These celestial events should prompt us to think deeply about stewardship, planetary defense, and spiritual readiness, regardless of scientific predictions. God is not threatened by good science; He is the Author of both truth and time (Psalm 24:1).
So, do these events point to an imminent Rapture?
The Rapture is a blessed hope promised to the Church (Titus 2:11–13), and the Lord’s coming will be sudden for a world not watching (1 Thessalonians 5:1–6). Celestial signs can be part of God’s wake-up strategy, but they are not clocks we can set. The 2014–2015 lunar tetrad, the 2017 and 2024 eclipses crossing the United States, the historic 2024 auroras, the 2025 eclipses, and the forthcoming Apophis flyby collectively form a striking backdrop for our times (timeanddate, 2014; NASA SVS, 2023; NASA Earth Observatory, 2024; NASA, 2025; NASA Science, 2025). Are these coincidences, or providences? Do they invite fear, or faithful urgency? Are we more eager to decode headlines than to repent of hidden sins, reconcile broken relationships, and share Christ while we can (2 Peter 3:9–12)? A sober answer is this: signs in the sky can point us to the nearness of Christ’s return without granting us a date. The wise posture is readiness and mission. If the trumpet sounded today, would we be found awake and at work (Matthew 24:45–47)?
Practical counsel for a watchful Church
Embrace watchful urgency, not passive observation. The convergence of celestial signs, biblical prophecy, and current geopolitical tensions clearly points toward the imminent Rapture and Christ's return. These are not mere coincidences but divine markers on God's prophetic calendar. Test everything by Scripture, holding fast to what is good (1 Thessalonians 5:19–22). The alignment of solar and lunar eclipses with Jewish feasts, unprecedented geomagnetic storms, and approaching celestial bodies are divine wake-up calls that Scripture foretold. Let these converging signs drive you to fervent prayer, bold evangelism, and righteous living before time runs out. Ask yourself and your church: are we preparing our communities for the imminent return of Christ (2 Timothy 4:8)? Are we courageously proclaiming these biblical truths even when ridiculed as "conspiracy theorists" (Matthew 5:10–12)? And when God continues to display His power through dramatic signs in the heavens, will those around us find us faithful witnesses who understood the times?
A final word of pastoral realism
We do not need one more countdown. We need the fear of the Lord, the joy of salvation, and the courage to witness in public without rancor. The devil works in darkness; the Church thrives in the light (Ephesians 5:11–14). Whatever the headlines before 2025, 2029 or 2032, Jesus is still Lord, and His return is still certain. The trumpet will sound. The only real question is whether we are watching with clean hands, clear eyes, and warm hearts.
